A LESSON IN SPEED (02/11/2003)
Students from across the globe had a lesson in speed measurement from Northumbria’s safety camera partnership.
Forty-eight post graduate students, including several from as far afield as India and China, pitched more antiquated speed devices such as mirrors and tape against the latest detection equipment on the A696 at Woolsington Bypass.
PC Eric Harrison was on hand to talk about safety cameras and explain how to use older police detection equipment such as Pro-Laser, as well as demonstrating the latest Gatso technology.
Rural transport officer Peter Mogridge, 40, of South Gosforth, is studying as well as working part-time. “I’ve been working in this field for years but I didn’t understand exactly how the equipment worked and how camera sites were identified according to accident statistics,” he said. “It was a really useful fieldwork exercise.”
A variable message sign, which flashes up motorists’ speed as they pass, was also in operation.
The students, who are all studying for transport-related MSc degrees, will now analyse the statistics provided by the different speed measurement methods.
