RESPECT DEMANDED ON THE ROADS (11/15/2006)
People in the North East have spoken out in favour of more respect on the roads. 98% of people in Tyne & Wear and Northumberland believe that it is important to show respect to others on the road. This comes after a summer of exhaustive Road Respect campaigning from Safe Speed for Life.
The independent research carried out by Wood Holmes Group on behalf of the Northumbria Safety Camera Partnership showed that 85% of people in the area also support safety cameras as a tool of curbing casualties on the roads. It was also the case that 83% of people thought that speeding was socially unacceptable.
Jeremy Forsberg from Safe Speed for Life said, "This shows that people want respect while driving and feel that a lack of it is dangerous. Cameras are just one tool, but an important tool for those who just won't respect the law and other drivers. Nearly two-thirds of people believe that dangerous drivers are more likely to be caught because of cameras. Drivers who often need to learn respect."
More and more people want cameras to protect their roads with over two-fifths thinking there are not enough cameras and only 1 in 10 saying too many. The myth of public opposition to cameras has been demolished with three-quarters of people believing that cameras are there to help drivers keep to the limits and not to punish them. 96% of people in the North East also believe that excessive and inappropriate speed plays a significant role in collisions resulting in a fatality or serious injury.
Mr Forsberg added, "Education in addition to enforcement is providing real results. However, some people still think speeding is acceptable and don't realise that it is responsible for so much carnage on the roads. We want people to know what the real issues are on the road, which is the needless loss of life and limb from careless driving. People want safer roads and feel that enforcement is necessary, because the majority are law-abiding drivers. This is about respect, those who have respect for the law and keep the roads safe, and those who don't respect the law and who need to realise that breaking the road rules is dangerous. Hopefully, this will mean critics of safety cameras will engage in a sensible debate rather than peddling myths and propaganda that work against road safety."
