Northumbria Safer Roads Initiative was set up to help reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured on our roads.

Cameras included in the initiative scheme are located at collision hotspots

The Northumbria Safer Roads Initiative was established in 2007 as an evolution of the Northumbria Safety Camera Partnership following changes to the programme and the partnership encompassing a broader remit for road safety. The camera enforcement element covers, speed, mobile phone offences, not in proper control, red-light jumping and other road traffic offences. Additionally, the partnership engages in a wider range of Education, Training and Publicity initiatives, including media campaigns, road shows, research and young driver projects. NSRI is dedicated to changing the driving culture on the roads to ensure we reduce the needless loss of life and limb on the region's roads. However, we also want to foster a culture of respect among road users to make driving a less stressful experience.

From April 2011 the funding arrangements have been modified after consultation with the Association of Chief Police Officers and the Department for Transport. Fines paid through the fixed penalty scheme continue to go directly to the Treasury. This is to continue to ensure that there is no element of profit for either the police or the local authorities. However, every offence costs the police money in processing, a portion of funding for the partnership will continue to derive from local authorities and will be supplemented through recouping money from those attending the National Driver Offender Retraining Scheme's such as Speed Awareness Courses.
